Stop Food Waste
Globally we produce enough food to feed everyone on our planet, yet one out of nine people go to bed hungry every night, and at the same time 33 % of all food produced for human consumption is wasted.
THIS HAS TO END!
Many of us, including myself, go shopping regularly and fill up our fridges with all kind of foods, and every time we fill our fridge we find foods that have been inside our fridge for some time and are near the end of being suitable for consumption, so most of the time these foods end up in our rubbish bins or in our bio waste.
These foods, together with supermarket foods that have not been sold within their expiration date and the foods that haven't even made their way into the supermarket for not meeting the required standards, sum up to an estimated 33% of food waste.
Considering the amount of energy, labor and use of land that have gone into the production of these 33% of wasted food, and how high the CO2 footprint is for this waste, there is definitely something wrong in our modern way of food consumption. In our modern "Western World" we spend an average of 10-15 % of our monthly income on food, wasting one third, compared to the less privileged countries on our planet where more than 50% of monthly income is spent on food and less than 2% of that food is wasted.
The only way to reduce this huge amount of food waste, is to create more awareness amongst consumers in our western society.
This October, the "United Nations World Food Programme" will launch #StopTheWaste,
a global movement to help fight food waste and you can get involved.
Search your fridge or pantry for ingredients that you’ve forgotten about (but are still safe to eat!) and use these ingredients to create a dish! Share a photo of your dish on social media with the hashtag #StopTheWaste, and tag as many friends as possible challenging them to do the same.
Don’t stop there! Share your recipe featuring the spare items you’ve found, or simply share your “secret tip” for the best food waste dish, then encourage others to share their own.
-Want to go big? Host a dinner party and ask friends to bring a food item that might have otherwise gone to waste. Move the party to the kitchen and create a new dish together.
- For all professional food businesses, restaurants and so on, try to do the same by creating a "zero waste" dish or menu, and share this as well under the #StopTheWaste hashtag!
Together we can change the world and actually make a difference! The more people join us in the fight against food waste the better it is for all of us, our planet and our future!
Join us now, start today 16.10.2019 on the international World Food Day.
